Space Battles occur frequently in colonized space, and even more frequently on trade routes and normal hyper space lines. Raiders, Outlaws, Rebels and the Insane lurk in the darkness of space, ready to attack a bountiful target for their own reasons. Space Ship technology has only recently become advanced enough to make battles in space even possible. This includes the invention of the Particle Shield Bridger, which allows space ships to become practically invulnerable to most weapons fire, as well as advances with short range sensor technologies. Most spaceships that travel the usual trade and transport routes, usually always have the proper licenses to carry these weapons… and some don’t. In either case, ship mounted weaponry is really only marginally useful. In the edge case of enemy ships having their shields down, or an unshielded ship, weapons are often used. However even then, it is more likely for a boarding party to enter the enemy vessel.
Boarding has become the standard way of conducting battles in space, due to most ships weapons technology rendering them at a standstill and the large cleanup costs of destroyed ships. Also it is a lot more profitable to capture an enemy ship, than it is to destroy it. Fast moving objects such as bullets, and energy based weapons cannot make it through almost invulnerable Particle Shield Bridge, but shuttles that move relatively slowly can get through quite easily. Boarding parties dispatch quick shuttles known as “Blitzers” that utilize magnetic docking systems to attach to a ship’s hull. Then the crew will either manually, or through on board equipment cut a hole in the ships hull. From there, most boarding parties utilize hand to hand combat, or melee weaponry to either capture or neutralize the other crew due to Remote Safety Mechanisms that disable ranged weaponry from functioning in the due to Remote Safety Mechanisms that disable ranged weaponry from functioning in the hazardous and fragile space ship environments.
